free swing tunic sewing pattern {perfect for leggings!}

This free swing tunic sewing design is an easy sew and the perfect longer length to clothing with leggings! Like to the LulaRoe "perfect tee" merely with a little extra swing and a slightly longer length.

For the past few years I've been avoiding the LulaRoe leggings trend, partly considering I wasn't sure I wanted to spend $30 per pair and partly considering I worried if I really did buy some I'd never put real pants on over again. Stretchy pants can be a bit dangerous, yous know?

Anyhow, a kind friend gifted me a pair of LulaRoe leggings and they really are as soft and comfy every bit everyone says. But I still think they're a flake pricey, and I'k likewise grumpy to watch a whole FB live to discover a pair I might really want to order. Just the unrivaled comfyness just kept tempting me to purchase more. Finally, I discovered the Viv Collection leggings on Amazon which are less than half the price and made from the same buttery soft brushed cloth, and I'm sold! I'm right in between the 1 size and tall + curvy size in Lula leggings and I ordered the Plus size of the Viv leggings and they're perfect!

Of course, if I'one thousand going to walk around in leggings, I gotta be wearing a long shirt and then that I don't scare the neighborhood children. So today I'm sharing a gratis swing tunic sewing pattern, a long tee shirt pattern with actress room around the hips for a pretty "swing".

Sew up a cute swing tunic to wear with your favorite leggings this fall! Easy sewing pattern and tutorial.

This blueprint is available in size large only (38 inch bosom), but since it is made with stretchy fabric and is very roomy effectually the waist and hips it will likely fit a range of sizes. This free tunic sewing pattern is similar to the LulaRoe perfect tee, although I remember it's actually a bit swingy-er. And a bit longer. I'm 5′ three″ and I cut almost 2 inches of length off earlier hemming my shirt, so it should be long enough even for taller ladies, i.e. the rest of the earth.

Click here to download the design. Impress information technology out at 100% or full size and make sure the test square measures i inch. Butt the pages against each other without trimming and tape together. Information technology takes x sheets of 8.v×11 paper and looks like this:

The swing tunic sewing pattern

You volition need 1.v  yards of 55-threescore inch wide knit (stretchy) fabric for this shirt. Wash and dry your fabric before you begin.

Tip: If you are planning to wear it with Lula leggings or the similar leggings I found on Amazon, yous'll want to choose a textile that is a bit slippery, otherwise it may non drape nicely across the brushed fabric of the leggings.

Here'southward how I laid out the design:

Swing tunic sewing pattern cutting diagram

Notice that the front of the shirt is cut on the fold. The back of the shirt is not cutting on the fold, so yous need to add 1/two seam allowance forth the long directly edge when cut. All the other edges already accept i/2 inch seam allowance included.

How to sew a tunic (long shirt) to vesture with leggings

You'll begin by placing your ii back pieces right sides together and sewing down the eye seam. This will make the back piece await just like the front piece, except the forepart slice has a lower neckline.

Swing tunic back piece with seam down the middle

Identify the front end piece on pinnacle of the back piece, right sides together, and run up across the shoulder seams as shown below.

Swing tunic front piece laid over back piece with shoulder seams marked

Next, we'll adhere the sleeves. Lay the tunic downwardly flat, right side up, as you see below.

Shirt opened up at the shoulder seam

Grab ane of your sleeves and discover the center of the height curve. Mark it with a pin. Lucifer that point up with the shoulder seam and pin together, equally shown below. Right sides are together.

Sleeve pinned so the top of the curve matches the shoulder seam

Continue to match upwardly the curved edge of the sleeve with the residual of the armscye. The sleeve curves out and the armscye curves in, and then the body of the shirt will become bunched up equally you pin the 2 pieces together.

Sleeve pinned into armscye

Run up along your pins to attach the sleeve to the shirt. Repeat with the other sleeve.

Now you lot can flip your tunic so the front and back pieces are right sides together once again. Sew together the side seams: upward the sleeves, nether the arms, and down each side. Information technology will at present look like this:

The next step is to bind the neckline. Take hold of your 26 inch piece of fabric and fold it in one-half lengthwise and press (photo ane). Notation: you won't use the entire length of the neckbinding. Find the middle of the neckbinding and pin information technology to the middle of the forepart neckline, raw edges matching upwardly (photo 2).

Pinning neckbinding into the tunic neckline

Give the neckbinding a fleck of a stretch, and start pinning it around the neckline. The bounden should be a bit shorter than the neckline itself, causing the neckline to bunch up a bit as yous pivot (photo iii). When you become to the back, open up the neckbinding and stitch it to itself, then trim abroad the excess (photo 4).

If y'all've never sewn a knit neckbinding earlier, it can accept some trial and error to figure out how much you lot should stretch the binding piece equally y'all're pinning information technology to the neckline. If your fabric doesn't have a lot of stretch, you don't need to stretch the binding piece also much, just if your fabric is very lightweight and stretchy, you'll desire to stretch it more. As you sew more knit neckbindings you'll become a feel for how information technology works. If you've never sewn one in before, you can measure the neckline, then multiply that number past .85 to get the estimated length your neckbinding should be. If you do that, but sew the short ends of the neckbinding together before yous beginning pinning it to your neckline, then pin it on evenly.

When you lot go to run up the binding to the neckline, the neckline will be bunched up nether the binding (elevation photo below). Stretch it out until the fabric lays apartment (bottom photo beneath), so sew the bounden all around the neckline.

Information technology may wait a bit wonky right off the machine, but when you press it with plenty of steam information technology should shrink upwards nicely and lay apartment:

Neckline finished and bound

The terminal thing to do is hem the sleeves to your desired length, and hem the bottom of the shirt. I took off about an inch and a one-half from the bottom hem, and and so turned it upwardly i full inch, and then even if yous're a bit taller than I am it should be plenty long to wear with leggings. Let me know if y'all decide to make the swing tunic sewing pattern!
